More importantly, what should Monahans NHL17 rating be?

I think a lot of the really young guys are taking 6-7 year deals so they end earlier and give them a chance at another 8 year contract when it's over. In Leaf land that's exactly what Rielly did.

Monohan said if would have signed for 20 years if he had the option. It was the Flames who only wanted 7.

There's a lot of things players say but in the end rely on their agents to make the best deal for them.

Gaudreau said he'd be happy to sign matching deals with Monahan... No way his agent let's him do that...

Monahan said he'd be willing to take less money so that the team would have more to be even more competitive and there was no way his agent was gonna let him do that.
This was a fair deal plain and simple

I agree with Adam French; it's got to be hard to find anyone who dislikes this contract. The only quibble I have with it is that I'd have liked to have seen 8 years; but I assume that Monahan's camp wanted a max of 7 to give himself a chance of landing another massive multi-year contract at age 28 rather than age 29. I think players (and agents) are realizing how age-sensitive clubs are becoming as analytics are revealing just how steep age-related performance drop-offs are for the majority of players.

Right now this deal is fair market price; if he continues to develop his game (and statistically his best years are still ahead of him), I can see him putting up 70+ or even 80+ point seasons for the next several years to come alongside Gaudreau; in which case this deal will be a huge bargain in a few years time.

#1 Center at 21 with two pylons in net and a pond hockey system...his defensive numbers will vastly improve, guy works his balls off
